Cutting

Having in house cutting demands a higher volume of sales in order to
justify the cost of employing a full time cutter. Therefore, start-up
businesses usually give the fabric to a cutting service to cut the
garments. Often, the cutter and the contractor are under one roof and
will be responsible for both cutting and sewing the complete garment.
The cutting is done on large, long cutting tables that are the full
width of the fabric rolled out on to them. The marker (as explained
earlier) is placed on top of the fabric and the piece goods cut for
production with band knives that vibrate up and down to cut through the
numerous layers of fabric at one time. Larger manufacturers use
computers to grade, make the marker, and cut out the pattern from the
fabric. The cut garments are then separated and bundled into lots to be
sewn together by the sewers.
